WHAT IS RESURRECTION BUSH?
The plant scientifically called Myrothamnus flabellifolia, is a woody-looking shrub that is native to Zimbabwe. On a normal day, the plant looks like a bunch of short, dry twigs with reddish stems.
What makes it unique however is how quickly its dead-looking leaves and stems turn green once it touches water, hence the name ‘Resurrection bush’.
It remains dry most of the year but quickly turns green during the rainy season. Thus the ideal time for collection is between May and September.
In fact, it is said that if you dropped a few dry sticks in water they would turn green within a couple of hours. This is interesting for those who would like to use it as an ornamental.
The shrub grows widespread in rocky, sun-facing hillsides, crevices and shallow soils in Zimbabwe making it easy to collect.
The herb tea is prepared from its small dried leaves and twigs. Our farmers are trained to harvest just the leaves and twigs leaving the roots. This ensures a sustainable supply all year round.
